EXPLORE LAUNCHES NEW HIKING TRIPS IN PATAGONIA FOR 2025

Explore has announced the addition of a new 11-night Hiking in Patagonia – Glaciers & Torres del Paine tour to its collection, with departures from November 2025 now on sale.

This hiking trip combines Chile and Argentina to take you off the beaten track to see Patagonia at its wild, windswept best. We still include the iconic moments, including a day walk to the base of the Torres spires, but we also get you away from the crowds to less-visited spots where you’ll have the wide-open spaces to yourselves.

The trip costs from £4,999 per person, including 11 nights’ accommodation (including three nights in a simple ‘refugio’) with breakfast and some additional meals, activities and excursions, and transport, with an Explore tour leader throughout. Flights are not included. The first departure will run on 9 November 2025.

Nicaragua projects complete

Just a Drop is thrilled to announce the completion of two projects in Nicaragua. At El Aserrio School, Just a Drop built new latrines so that the school’s 285 students had functioning toilets, and were less often ill. Now they are healthy and able to learn! In Las Cruces community, Just a Drop had already installed a piped water system to provide safe water to people’s homes, but recently they also completed a watershed project, which ensures that land is more fertile for farmers and the community to grow food crops. ARGENTINA

Estancia Los Potreros

The Gauchos of Argentina

Long before Estancia Los Potreros operated in tourism, the Begg family, were well-known as livestock farmers, the primary use of the estancia was to breed an award-winning herd of Aberdeen Angus, this tradition remains. Today we successfully farm Aberdeen Angus and have a herd of over 100 horses. Aspects of the estancia are run by our team of gauchos. An ever-growing challenge for us is the battle between Tourism and Authenticity: While tourism can help preserve some aspects of Gaucho culture, there is a risk that it becomes commercialised or “staged,” losing its authenticity in the process and harming the culture and community around us. We have now released our next video teaching the world about the gaucho and what we do on the farm…

Argentine Asado at its best

Argentina is known for its beef, so to share in a local asado (barbecue) is an iconic experience which no visitor should miss. There are parrillas on every corner in Buenos Aires, but we recently visited one of the most original, which offers an intimate and shared experience which is unique (and figures in the Michelin guide). A celebration of our heritage and the best grass-fed beef, with guests sitting together at a counter around the fire, watching the grill master at work and trying his 14-step tasting menu hot off the grill, accompanied by excellent wines, as conversation and laughter flows.

If you ask us nicely, we can take you there! Ask Merina Begg who will be at WTM

Sacha Lodge

Pygmy Marmosets are back at Sacha Lodge!

After a storm three years ago caused the disappearance of a family of pygmy marmosets from our reserve, our dedicated team of guides has finally discovered a new family of 10 individuals in our reserve. This family includes an adult male, an adult female, three subadults, three juveniles, and two infants.

In August, we welcomed a team led by Professor Stella de la Torre from Universidad San Francisco de Quito to study these fascinating primates. Their research aims to understand the factors affecting marmoset survival and develop conservation strategies. The team included also Neil Ever Osborne, David Coulson and Jessica Camille Aguirre.

We are grateful for their vital work in protecting Ecuador’s unique wildlife.

Wellness upgrades

Maroma, A Belmond Hotel, Riviera Maya, reopened in 2023 following a complete renovation with a spa by LVMH maison, Guerlain – the opening first in Latin America for the brand. It is a temple where rituals of purification and rebirth take place, born from the power of nature, celebrating both Maya culture and the French maison’s wellness expertise. This winter a new treatment incorporates the frequency of the buzzing bees and the healing vibrations of sound therapy to stimulate the brain, balance energy, and inspire connection with nature. This ritual is inspired by the sacred, stingless Melipona bee, revered by the Mayans for over 3,000 years as a symbol of spiritual resonance.
